With the 59th Super Bowl coming up, it's good to be reminded of some of the craziest moments in Super Bowl history. Starting in 1967, the Super Bowl has brought together people every year to watch the best teams in the NFL play for the championship title. It is a game that brings together fans and creates memories through iconic moments talked about for years after. Throughout these many years, there have been some truly memorable moments that we at CoachCorner want to highlight.
Super Bowl III, 1969 – Joe Namath's Guarantee
Prior to Super Bowl III, the Baltimore Colts were considered one of the greatest teams in the league, while the New York Jets were seen as the underdogs. Joe Namath, the Jets QB, thought otherwise. He shocked the sports world by guaranteeing a win over the Colts: "We're gonna win the game. I guarantee it."
Many were skeptical. Despite the doubts, Namath delivered on his promise by leading the Jets to a 16-7 victory. Namath's guarantee remains one of the most legendary moments in not only Super Bowl history, but all of sports history.
Super Bowl XLII, 2008 – David Tyree's Helmet Catch
The New York Giants faced off against the New England Patriots, who were looking to complete a perfect 19-0 season. With only 2:39 remaining, the Giants trailed 14-10 needing a touchdown to win. Eli Manning escaped a sack and launched a deep pass — and David Tyree completed it by pinning the ball against his helmet while falling to the ground.
It is widely considered one of the greatest catches in NFL history, and it set up the game-winning touchdown.
Super Bowl XLIII, 2009 – Santonio Holmes' Toe-Tap Catch
Super Bowl XLIII had one of the craziest endings in Super Bowl history, with the Pittsburgh Steelers facing the Arizona Cardinals. With 35 seconds left, the Steelers trailed 23-20. Ben Roethlisberger threw toward Santonio Holmes in the back corner of the end zone. Holmes reached out and caught the ball mid-air while keeping both feet in bounds — dragging his left foot, then his right, to stay just inside the line.
The way Holmes held on while managing to stay in bounds in such a small space remains one of the most memorable touchdowns in Super Bowl history.
Super Bowl XLIX, 2015 – Malcolm Butler's Goal-Line Interception
Super Bowl XLIX ended with one of the most debated decisions in football history. With 26 seconds left, the Seahawks trailed 28-24 with the ball at the Patriots' 1-yard line. Instead of handing it to Marshawn Lynch, the Seahawks called a pass play — and rookie Malcolm Butler intercepted Russell Wilson's throw at the goal line.
The turnover sealed the Patriots' win. The play remains one of the most controversial coaching decisions in Super Bowl history.
Super Bowl LI, 2017 – The 28-3 Comeback
The New England Patriots and Atlanta Falcons produced the greatest comeback in Super Bowl history. The Falcons built a stunning 28-3 lead in the third quarter. Tom Brady and the Patriots refused to quit — they scored 25 unanswered points to tie the game at 28-28, forcing the first overtime in Super Bowl history.
In overtime, Brady led a game-winning drive capped by a James White touchdown for a 34-28 victory. The comeback solidified Brady's legacy and broke multiple records. Nothing like it has happened since.
